After eating breakfast at one of the many restaurants in the hotel (we won't be doing that again) we left 'New York', crossed the road and walked north along the strip for a couple of kms. The buildings are enormous and what looks to be just a little way up the road is hundreds of meters away. The Strip had it's many tour, show and entertainment 'pushers'. Those
pesky people are trying to
fleece you into help you buy stuff you don't want or give them money for the CD of music that's 'free'. Then of course there are the homeless people begging for 'just a penny' (some are smarter and sell bottled water for $1) and the creepy men dressed up as superheroes and other characters that want a tip for a picture made it a very interesting stroll. It took us a few hours to walk up and back the other side of the road. We went into many shops and had a look inside a few other casinos. The Planet Hollywood Hotel Casino has a thunder storm with rain timed to happen every 30 mins inside it's shopping mall. It's quite spectacular and reminds us that all of these huge opulent places have been paid for by people gambling and loosing their money to the Casinos. But we aren't going to be sucked in! We finished the walk mid afternoon and after a short rest went to the closest Walmart to look at
Walmartians and buy some much needed supplies (Breakfast cereal, milk, make up, shampoo, conditioner, another suitcase. It was all so cheap). Unfortunately, we didn't have the camera to get our own photos of the locals so you will have to make do with the link above. The store was huge and sold everything you ever need and don't ever need. We returned to the hotel after dark and the kids had room service pizza for tea while Christine and Andrew went for another walk along the strip to see it all lit up. The Casinos have a great trick. They have 20 different entrances but only the one exit, or so it seems. We walked across the road to the MGM Grand Hotel Casino for a quick 5 minute look but once inside couldn't find the way to get out. There are no EXIT signs. It took us 30 minutes to back track and leave the way we entered. Without the kids in tow we managed to attract the attention of even more weirdos pushing their crap. Christine was desperate to win millions of dollars to continue the holiday indefinitely so she put $4 through a pokie machine that turned into $67. Look out MGM Resorts International (who own most of the casinos in Las Vegas) the Lanes are about to take you to the cleaners!
