Day 14. Monterey to Lompoc. Thursday 2nd January

We continued along California Highway 1 with a 66 mile section through Big Sur, full of hundreds of curves and hills as the road hugged the coast. Christine loved being on the right hand side of the car, with the car being on the right hand side of the road, as we passed sheer cliffs to the water and the sun blaring in her face all day. The area around Big Sur is also home to Red Wood Forrest with huge tree trunks on the road verges. The coast near San Simeon is home to Elephant Seals and we stopped with all the other tourists and saw hundreds of them on the beaches. Close by is the very popular Hearst Castle. We thought we'd pop up to the castle for a cuppa only to be informed at the visitor centre that all the tours were sold out for the day. Hundreds of people had all pre-booked their tickets and were waiting for one of the many buses to take them up to the castle. So instead we had a quick bite to eat and a look through a small museum before continuing to drive south. We stopped at the town of Lompoc for the night.

Andrew offered to swap cars (and back seat occupants) with the Corvette driver.

  1. Bet the change in temperature has been good. That last look of Banff was just a great photo. Enjoy America - Payne family

  2. Looks like we arrived to the nice weather. Huge winter snow storm on the other side of the country. Some of us are even in shorts and T shirts.
