Day 13. San Francisco to Monterey - New Years Day. Wednesday 1st January 2014

Happy New Year to us and anyone else reading this.
We had breakfast, squeezed in all the extra bits into the bags and left the hotel to drive south. We had a choice of a couple of routes to get to Los Angeles. One being the Freeway that would have taken 6 hours or take California Highway 1 via the coast. We decided to drive along the US version of The Great Ocean Road. (Finger crossed it goes better than Day 89 on 'The Lanes BIG Trip' )
After negotiating San Francisco traffic we found the correct freeway that took us south a few miles before exiting onto Highway 1. Being a public Holiday the roads and carparks along the coast were chock-a-block. The Pacific Ocean looked remarkably like the Indian Ocean and in fact all the other oceans we've seen. The cliffs, bays and beaches were good to see (from the car doing 65 mph). We stopped at a Safeway in Santa Cruz to buy lunch (and beer -  Dozen Coronas for $13!) and then we thought we'd go and eat it at the Santa Cruz Pier/Boardwalk. We eventually found a car park spot behind an amusement park where we quickly ate lunch in the car. The next 40 miles was on and off freeway with nothing too exciting to see (Except for lots of cool cars) until we reached Monterey where we pulled up for the night in a motel.
